Planting plan

The client’s quarter acre plot is envisioned as a small, regenerative food forest that can nourish her household and support the women working on the land. The design team was engaged to study the land and propose a clear path forward, beginning with a site visit, contextual assessment, planting plan, species list and implementation sequence.

The recommended approach focuses on simple earthworks to slow and sink water, steady soil-building through mulch and biomass, and phased planting that follows natural succession. Initial work recommendations include preparing peripheral trenches and living fences, raised beds and key structures, followed by the establishment of canopy trees, shrubs, understory species and groundcovers over time. A compact vegetable garden and low-energy irrigation methods, such as clay pots, round out the design. Together, these steps set the foundation for a resilient, productive and easily maintained food forest.
